D&D stands for Dungeons & Dragons, which is a popular tabletop role-playing game (RPG) created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. It was first published in 1974 and has since become one of the most influential and enduring games in the history of tabletop gaming. In Dungeons & Dragons, players take on the roles of characters in a fantasy world, typically portrayed as medieval or magical settings. One player serves as the Dungeon Master (DM) who acts as the storyteller, referee, and narrator, guiding the game and describing the world, non-player characters (NPCs), and situations the players encounter. The game is played with a combination of storytelling, improvisation, and dice rolling. Players create their characters (something you can do easily Here!) by choosing a race (such as human, elf, dwarf, etc.) and a class (like wizard, rogue, fighter, etc.), which determine the character's abilities and skills. As the game progresses, characters go on adventures, solve puzzles, battle monsters, and gain experience points (XP) to become more powerful. The outcome of actions and events in the game is often determined by rolling polyhedral dice, (you can read more about dice below) such as the iconic 20-sided die (d20), which adds an element of chance and unpredictability to the gameplay. Dungeons & Dragons is cherished by many for its immersive storytelling, creative freedom, and social interaction among players. It has a large and dedicated community that continues to create new content, adventures, and campaigns for players to enjoy.

How do dice work?

In Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), dice are an essential component of the game mechanics, used to introduce an element of chance and randomness into the various actions and events that take place during the game. Different types of dice are used, each represented by the letter "d" followed by the number of sides on the die. The most common dice used in D&D are the four-sided die (d4), six-sided die (d6), eight-sided die (d8), ten-sided die (d10), twelve-sided die (d12), and twenty-sided die (d20). There is also a percentile die (d100), which is actually two ten-sided dice, one representing the tens digit and the other representing the ones digit (commonly shown as a d10 and a d10 marked from 00 to 90). Here's a breakdown of how these dice are used in D&D:

  • d4: This four-sided die is often used to determine small amounts of damage or other minor outcomes.
  • d6: The six-sided die is one of the most familiar dice used in many games. In D&D, it is commonly used to determine weapon damage, certain character abilities, and other simple tasks.
  • d8: The eight-sided die is frequently used for calculating damage, healing amounts, and certain spell effects.
  • d10: This ten-sided die is used in various contexts, such as determining damage, certain character abilities, and percentile rolls.
  • d12: The twelve-sided die is usually used to determine damage from certain powerful weapons and abilities.
  • d20: The twenty-sided die is the most iconic and crucial die in D&D. It is the primary die used for determining the success or failure of most actions, combat rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and other pivotal moments in the game. Characters' core attributes (like Strength, Dexterity, etc.) and various bonuses are added to or subtracted from the d20 roll to determine the overall result.
  • d100: The percentile die, or d100, is used for percentile rolls, which are necessary for certain rare or critical events, such as determining the likelihood of a rare item appearing or the success of an extraordinary task.
In the game, the Dungeon Master (DM) describes the situation, and the players often declare their intended actions. The DM then calls for the relevant dice rolls to determine the outcomes based on the players' choices and the game's rules. The element of chance provided by the dice adds excitement, unpredictability, and risk to the game, making each session unique and memorable.

How do I make a character?

Making a character in Dungeons & Dragons is one of the greatest parts of the game. It involves your imagination and the roll of some dice. If you are new to the game, the best way to start is deciding what race your character will be as well as the class you will be playing. Then you will get your stats by rolling dice and deciding which stats you want your character to be strongest in. After you have all of your stats the DM (dungeon master) will help you find the skills you are proficient in and calculate any other odds and ends. Then you will decide which weapons and/or spells your character will use. You can decide to design your character on paper by drawing, finding a reference, or you can just use your imagination and start the game!
